Curricular information is subject to change.

Commerce International (BCIT) combines a flexible business education from Ireland’s leading business school with the linguistic skills and cultural understanding to succeed in the exciting world of international business.  Students of the BCIT course are well-grounded in the theory and practice of business management and equipped to understand and comment critically on business issues. To achieve a truly global perspective on business, it is necessary to immerse yourself in the culture and not just learn the vocabulary. As part of the course, BCIT students will also take a range of literature and culture modules from the UCD School of Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics. Some examples of modules currently on offer include French New Wave Cinema, Surrealism in Spain and Mexico, Grimm’s Tales, Italian Cinema and Society. Students are brought to a high level of language proficiency and cultural sensitivity.

Students on the Commerce International programme will spend Year 3 studying in one of our highly regarded international partner institutions and will also have an opportunity to participate in the BCIT summer internship module.

The purpose of the Bachelor of Commerce (International) programme is to develop commercially astute graduates with a sophisticated degree of intercultural competence that will make a significant contribution to business and broader society in a global context.  We aspire to produce graduates that, over the long-term, will assume leadership positions in organisations on the international stage and will have a significant impact on the development of business, economic, and social life, nationally and internationally.

We aim to foster critical thinking and to develop intellectual acumen through the development of linguistic proficiency and through the exploration of the cultural, business and social traditions of other countries.  Graduates will demonstrate critical awareness of business trends, issues, and developments; be fully equipped to lead and manage in a multicultural environment; be creative problem-solvers and have an analytical approach to decision-making; have a deep-rooted ethical and societal awareness with an understanding of, and respect for, cultural diversity; demonstrate a multilingual capacity to communicate persuasively and professionally; and have a life-long commitment to personal and professional excellence and development.

The Bachelor of Commerce (International) curriculum is designed to develop future leaders through a range of transformative educational experiences and pedagogical innovations from both business and the arts, designed to foster the student’s own development of autonomous learning strategies, independent thought and intellectual curiosity.  Students also spend an academic year with an international partner university, so are immersed in the culture and language of the host country.

The programme emphasises a mix of teaching and assessment methods including business case studies, interactive language classes, tutorials and the use of the virtual learning environment.  Students are exposed to faculty, national and international, with a range of different perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds.

Commerce International
The Bachelor of Commerce International (Bcomm (Hons) International) degree concentrates on providing you with everything you need to pursue a career in business and industry, while also developing your language and international business abilities. Your degree will be recognised by employers as a leading international business degree, and your language skills will add an extra dimension to your opportunities.

Business subjects and languages are combined during your four year course. In the early stages, the focus is on an intensive education in a broad range of business subjects, as well as your chosen language, and the country's literature and culture.

In later years you will be required to attend one of our counterpart European Universities/Business Schools to follow a full academic programme of business subjects. These will be given in your chosen language. This allows you to integrate your language and business education, while also experiencing the country's culture and society. You then return to UCD Quinn School, where you will be able to choose modules from the areas of business that interest you most.

What Will I Study?
You will first study modules in Management, Economics, Marketing, Finance, Accountancy and Managing Employee Relations. This provides you with an excellent foundation in all business areas. At the same time you will take modules relating to your chosen language through the UCD School of Languages, Literatures and Film.

Your third year is spent at one of our counterpart European Universities/Business Schools. The work that you do will be equivalent to a year's work at UCD. By the time you reach your final year you will have a good idea which strand of business you wish to pursue and what you would like to do after you graduate. At this point, with the many options offered by UCD Quinn School and UCD Horizons you will be able to specialise in your preferred area, be it Marketing, Accounting, Banking or Human Resources

Career & Postgraduate Opportunities
When you graduate after four years you will have achieved a degree that is recognised internationally. This is no idle boast: a UCD Quinn School BComm (Hons) International is a highly valued business qualification, acknowledged by major universities, professional bodies and employers around the world. And that means you have tremendous opportunities in any number of business areas, such as Accountancy, Financial Services, Marketing and Personnel Management. Or you could consider a broader management role in public service, state-sponsored bodies, industry and commerce.

Whatever you decide, your international language will be a major attraction for many employers.
Alternatively you may decide to further your education by pursing postgraduate study, taking masters or doctoral degrees at the UCD Michael Smurfit School of Business, at the UCD Blackrock campus, or at other universities in Ireland or overseas.

Students on the Commerce International programme will spend Year 3 studying in one of our highly regarded international partner institutions. This mandatory year abroad is an integral part of the BCIT programme and offers a unique opportunity for personal development and academic growth while immersed in the language and culture of the host country. While this immersive experience is a demanding challenge, education experts have shown that these multicultural competencies are strongly linked with innovative thinking and creative performance. In third year, whether at home or abroad,  you will also have an opportunity to participate in the BCIT summer internship module, and avail of academic credit for this experiential learning.

A list of partner universities can be viewed here

BComm International graduates find employment in the private, public and not-for-profit or NGO sectors, or set up their own companies. Many different career paths are available, and students who can combine an international language with a business qualification are highly employable graduates for multinational companies. In addition, the focus on multicultural competencies gives BCIT graduates a unique competitive advantage in the global marketplace.
