Graduates of History and Politics have key skills in research, analysis and communication that are highly valued by employers. History & Politics graduates work across: International Organizations, Broadcasting and Journalism, Business, Civil Service, Law, NGOs, Publishing, Public Relations, Politics, Research, Teaching, Marketing, Policymaking, Tourism, Heritage.



Graduates are eligible to apply for UCD MA and MSc programmes in either History or Politics and International Relations. For more information see www.ucd.ie/graduatestudies.


Stage 1

Students are registered to nine core modules (45 credits) and should choose two 5-credit option modules. You may choose a further module as an elective in the spring trimester from the list of option modules or from the general elective list. It is recommended that students spread their credit workload evenly between Trimester 1 and Trimester 2.

Stage 2

Students take five stage 2 core modules (25 credits) and should select at least three 5-credit History option modules and two 5-credit Politics option modules.

Stage 3

Students who remain in UCD for the full year should take 50 option credits at level 3 plus 10 elective credits.
Students should select 25 credits of Politics modules: At least 20 credits should be taken from the 10-credit Politics Options and 5 credits from the 5-credit Politics Options.
Students should select 25 credits of History modules: At least 20 credits should be taken from level 3 10-credit modules and 5 credits from level 3 5-credit modules.
Students who take up a trimester-long exchange or internship for one trimester and are in UCD for the other trimester only should take 20 option credits at level 3, plus 10 elective credits. A minimum of 10 credits should be taken in both History and Politics. Extra option modules from your programme can be taken in place of your electives if you wish.

Stage 4

Students take 50 credits of option modules, plus 10 credits of electives.

Students can choose to take a 20-credit dissertation/capstone option (which comprises a 5-credit research skills module AND the 15-credit dissertation) plus a further 30 credits of option modules, or simply 50 credits of taught option modules.

Students who take the 20-credit dissertation/capstone option must take at least 15 credits in History option modules (one 10-credit module plus one 5-credit module) and 15 credits in Politics option modules (one 10-credit modules plus one 5-credit module).

Students who simply take 50 credits of taught option modules need to take 25 credits in History option modules (two 10-credit modules plus one 5-credit module) and 25 credits in Politics option modules (two 10-credit modules plus one 5-credit module).
