INRL10020 Foundations of Intl Relations

This module offers an introduction to the main issues in contemporary international politics. It first examines the development of the modern international system, focusing especially on the post-Cold War era. It then examines a range of substantive issues that occupy students of contemporary international politics: war and other forms of inter-state conflict, global trade and communication, migration, economic inequality, international integration, terrorism, human rights, the United Nations and the role of multinational corporations and transnational pressure groups. Note: This is an attendance-critical module. Students must attend lectures and tutorials in person. There is no possibility of taking this module online.

On successful completion of this module, students will have a grasp of
- the evolution of the contemporary international system;
- key features of that system including state sovereignty, diplomacy, war, international institutions and international trade
- important debates in international relations on issues such as global inequality, environmental degradation and human rights

Each lecture will revolve around a particular topic and associated core reading. Tutorials feature a blend of learning activities including in-class debates.
