The vision of RUMC is to be a health and well-being focused, globally recognised, education and research centre of the highest quality. The RUMC mission is to contribute to patients and society through excellence in education, learning and research and to benefit healthcare in Malaysia and the surrounding region. The mission statement considers the international context of healthcare education. In particular RUMC has benchmarked our common education philosophy, curriculum and assessment in medical education against RCSI and UCD standards. The vision and mission statement are posted on the website and the VLE.

- The RUMC’s educational programme is designed to produce doctors who are equipped with the necessary knowledge and competence and who are ethical, humane and caring in their professional approach.
- The doctors graduate with a broad-based medical education and a commitment to life-long learning.
- They are capable of coping with looking after patients in hospitals as well as in the community.
- They are given the capacity and willingness to acquire more knowledge independently and thus are able to be trained further to go into diverse career options.
- The curriculum model is a two-cycle system with the 2.5 years spent in Dublin at either University College Dublin (UCD) or the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in predominantly pre-clinical medical sciences. Basic history taking, clinical examination and communication skills are taught.
- Back in RUMC, the course is essentially a clinical one with a revisiting of medical sciences as appropriate. At the end of the second cycle (total of 5 years) the degree of MB BCh BAO is awarded.
- Possess and apply in-depth knowledge of the core biomedical and clinical sciences that underpin the practice of medicine.
- Be able to maintain and enhance professional activities through lifelong learning.
- Critically evaluate information and its sources and apply this appropriately in their decision making.
- Facilitate the learning of patients, families, junior colleagues, other health professionals, the public, and others, as appropriate.
- Contribute to the creation, dissemination, application, and translation of new medical knowledge and practices through research and audit.
- Recognise personal and professional limits of knowledge and competence and consult appropriately.
- Establish clinical skills to that underpin the performance and completion of patient centred assessment and therapeutic interventions in the later programme.
- Understand and accept the roles and responsibilities of the doctor as defined by the Medical Council in Ireland and be prepared to accept the roles and responsibilities of the doctor as defined by the Malaysian Medical Council.
- Be committed to physician health and wellbeing including self.
- Recognise personal and professional limits of knowledge and consult appropriately.
- Possess team working skills to promote and maintain the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary team in healthcare provision.
- Develop and maintain communication skills to support all roles.
Less than 25 credits of electives. Undergraduate degree students are entitled to take a minimum number of elective
