In first year, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the core principles, concepts, methods and theories relevant to Economics and Finance. The initial emphasis is on quantitative methods, including Maths and Statistics, and Economics, providing solid academic foundations on which your knowledge and competencies in Business and Finance will be developed throughout the degree.

In second year you will apply this knowledge to practical and important problems faced by businesses and policymakers in a broad range of settings across the financial industry. You will also have the opportunity to complete a semester abroad followed by a year-long industry internship.

In final year, you can specialise according to your area of interest, choosing from Economics, Finance or Maths & Statistics.

The Finance stream focuses on problems and applications relevant to the financial industry covering financial theory and effective problem-solving techniques, and their application to decision-making.

The Economics and Maths & Statistics streams focus on different aspects of economic analysis and quantitative methods, preparing you to support decision-making as a consultant, policy maker or analyst.

In second year, students can participate in a personalised mentorship programme, gaining industry knowledge, advice and support from the College of Business alumni community.

In second year, students have the opportunity to study abroad for a trimester at one of our exchange partner universities in countries such as Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Finland, Hong Kong and Singapore.

As part of the curriculum, students are engaged with issues related to sustainability in all of its many facets, including responsible leadership, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and inclusive business practices. I chose to study Economics & Finance because of its strong career prospects and the opportunity to study abroad. My interest in Mathematics, Accounting, and Economics in secondary school provided a strong foundation for the degree’s mathematics focus. Through the UCD Student Managed Fund, I gained practical experience in investment decision-making and developed technical skills. I also studied abroad at the National University of Singapore and completed an internship at KKR, a global investment firm, where I received a return job offer. Beyond academics, the Quinn School’s volunteering and student engagement opportunities helped me strengthen my leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills.

I chose the BSc Economics and Finance programme because of the wide array of potential employment opportunities. The course structure is laid out very well. In first and second year, an emphasis is put on understanding the mathematical and statistical concepts. There is a shift to applied learning in final year where the concepts taught initially are implemented further to finance and economics problems.

One of the highlights for me was the Quinn internship. I spent a year with IBI Corporate Finance in Dublin and was able to apply the knowledge I had learned during my studies while also learning new skills. I would thoroughly recommend this programme to any prospective students with a keen interest in maths and its application to the finance industry.
