About This Course

The BSc in Economics is designed for students who wish to study the subject intensively from the time they enter UCD.

If you are interested in people’s behaviour and in current affairs, and if you enjoy problem- solving and are comfortable with maths, then economics is an ideal degree choice for you.

It is a 3-year concentrated programme that provides students with thorough foundations in microeconomics and macroeconomics and their applications across a wide range of areas such as international trade, financial markets, healthcare, public finance, labour markets and the economics of the environment and climate change.

Students will develop skills in data analysis and be supported in the development of their analytical and problem-solving skills. By taking modules developing key skills at an early stage in the programme, students on the BSc in Economics are able to take a wide range of the advanced and specialty field electives in their second and third years.  This degree also features several dedicated classes just for students on this degree devoted to developing competencies in research, analysis, numerical, writing and communications skills.

What you will study depends on how you will study Economics at UCD. The Single-Major Economics (DN710) degree is a three-year concentrated course designed for students who wish to study Economics intensively throughout their time at UCD. If you wish to combine the study of Economics with another subject, you may study it as a Joint-Major subject through the four-year Social Sciences (DN700) degree.

First Year

All students will study Introduction to Economics, Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics and Introduction to Quantitative Economics. Single-Major students will study additional modules to develop key skills at the early stage in their course, so that they may proceed to a wide range of advanced and speciality electives in second and third year. Single-Major students also select three optional modules from Sociology, Geography, Politics, Mathematics or Statistics, plus one elective module.

Second Year

Joint-Major students will be introduced to data analysis and statistical modelling and will take intermediate modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics. Single-Major students will take additional modules designed to build on core skills such as: Optimisation for Economics, and Introduction to Financial Economics, plus Elective modules.

Third Year

In their final year, Single-Major students will undertake an Economics Research Workshop and deepen their technical knowledge by taking advanced modules in econometrics, microeconomics and macroeconomics. They also have access to optional field modules such as health economics, money and banking, public economics and elective modules. Joint Major students can apply to undertake an internship or to study abroad for a trimester or year.

Fourth Year

In their final year, Joint-Major students choose modules that deepen their technical knowledge and can specialise in their preferred economic fields by appropriately choosing optional modules.

Assessment

Teaching takes place in lectures and tutorials, with students also participating in small group classes to work on group projects and presentations. A combination of end-oftrimester written examinations and continuous assessment is used.

You can apply to study abroad for a year in partner universities across the globe by extending your degree from 3 to 4 years and leading to the award of BSc International degree: The Netherlands | Belgium | Italy | France | Germany | Spain | US | Asia | Australia

Economics graduates are in demand in many professions and industries including banking, finance, management consultancy, insurance, media, the civil service, research, communications and international organisations, as well as Government. Many of our graduates work in Bank of Ireland, Price Waterhouse Cooper, KPMG, EY, and Novo Nordisk.

A recent study suggests that graduates majoring in economics receive 46% higher annual early-career wages than they would have with their second-choice majors. Many graduates opt for further study in Economics or in Business, Finance or Law programmes in Ireland or abroad. The School of Economics offers MSc graduate programmes aimed at further developing analytical and professional skills.

In Year 3, you can apply for an optional internship in a range of organisations in the public and private sectors, for example: Communications | Banking | Finance | Business | Journalism

Below is a list of all modules offered for this degree in the current academic year. Click on the module to discover what you will learn in the module, how you will learn and assessment feedback profile amongst other information.

BSc Economics

Economics students learn about how and why people and organisations make decisions and choose between alternative ways of spending their money and using their time, energy and skills. This course equips students with the tools to think critically about some of the most important issues facing humanity today, such as economic growth, prosperity, poverty, income inequality and globalisation. The goal is to educate students to understand how it is possible to shift human behaviour toward achieving sustainable development.

  • Quality Education (SDG 4)
  • Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8)
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9)
  • Reduce Inequalities (SDG 10)
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)

The degree in Economics provided me with an outlet to express my curiosity. It's a specialised degree that lets you build real depth, but economics is a remarkably varied discipline, and the breadth of modules reflects that. The opportunity to engage in my own personal research project in the final year was a particularly fulfilling experience, it was a chance to combine what I’ve learned over the past three years and concentrate on a topic that really interested me.
