Curricular information is subject to change.

This module provides an introduction to sociology as both a field of study and an academic discipline. Organised around key sociological concepts, it explores fundamental aspects of human societies, including inequality, gender, power, culture, and social change. Through these themes, students will critically examine how societies function, evolve, and shape individual and collective experiences.

By engaging with sociological theories and methodologies, students will develop analytical tools to understand and investigate social structures, relationships, and transformations. Each week is dedicated to a central concept — such as society, inequality, or crisis — allowing for in-depth discussion and application of sociological perspectives.

Whether you are new to sociology or looking to deepen your understanding, this module offers a foundational exploration of the key ideas that shape our world.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

- Distinguish sociological concepts from other terms;
- Gain familiarity with major objectives and perspectives of sociology;
- Approach the sociological imagination by starting to develop relevant questions.

Indicative Module Content:

This module is organised around a selection of key sociological concepts, including crisis, society, stratification, class and race, gender and sexuality, social change, and so on. The discussion of these concepts serves as an opportunity to explore major themes and areas of sociological study, through which students gain an understanding of the methodologies of social research.

Lectures are complemented by four weeks of tutorial seminars covering the history of sociology, the sociological imagination, and research methods. In these small-group sessions, students work closely with an experienced tutor who guides them through the fascinating field of sociology.
