The BA Humanities is an innovative, interdisciplinary four-year programme that combines multiple subjects to provide coherence and depth to student learning within nine carefully structured pathways. Taught by expert academics in the Arts and Humanities, the BA Humanities programme offers both intensive training in particular disciplines and unique skill sets that are developed by bringing together subjects that and relate closely to each other. Students will gain essential life and employment skills, including critical, analytical and creative thinking, and expert communications, while learning how to be adaptable and flexible in preparation for employment in a dynamic work environment.

The Languages, Linguistics and Cultures pathway is designed for students who are seeking a high level of language and intercultural competency by developing effective communication and analytical skills. It takes a holistic approach to language by fostering linguistics, alongside literary and cultural approaches. Students can choose between French, German, Greek, Italian, Irish, Latin, and Spanish, with Portuguese and Welsh also available as minors. Irish modules are directed towards its status as a modern working language in the European Union and towards broadening its scope nationally and internationally. This pathway focuses on specific oral and written language skills and critical intercultural and interdisciplinary skills. Its emphasis on modern language teaching methods combines theoretical and practical resources with a range of primary material such as literary texts, material culture, natural spoken language, and computer-mediated texts. Learning activities critically explore communicative practices and students will engage with a variety of approaches to language and language related products, including approaches based on literary, linguistic, historic and cultural studies.

This programme targets students who aim for a high level of language and intercultural competency developing effective communication and analytical skills through the acquisition of linguistic and cultural proficiency in English and in a second language. Students can choose between Ancient Greek, French, German, Italian, Irish, Latin and Spanish, with Portuguese and Welsh also available as minors.



The programme takes a holistic approach to language by fostering linguistic, literary and cultural approaches to language. This prepares students for a variety of career paths including: careers in education, media, translation, public service, cultural institutions, research, editing and publishing, and a wide range of private sector employment opportunities that require intercultural competences.



This pathway focuses on specific oral and written language skills as well as critical intercultural and interdisciplinary skills. Its emphasis on language teaching methods combines theoretical knowledge and practical skills focusing on a range of primary material such as literary texts, material culture, natural spoken language, and computer mediated texts. Learning activities critically explore communicative practices and students will engage with a variety of approaches to language and language-related production, including literary, linguistic, historical and cultural studies-based approaches. The programme fosters a wide range of transferable skills ranging from active communication skills in English and a second language, academic writing, speaking and presentation skills, to project-work and critical analysis skills. Student learning is fostered and assessed in a variety of ways such as oral, written and aural examinations, peer assessment, hands on small scale research projects, essays and presentations. Students are strongly encouraged to spend their third year abroad and/or doing an internship.

13 - Develop research skills through a hands-on research project and/or actively apply academic skills to a range of domains through an internship.

This course prepares students for a variety of career paths, including: careers in education, media, translation, public service, cultural institutions, research, editing and publishing, and a wide range of private sector employment opportunities that require intercultural competences. With regard to the Irish language, one of the main aspects of this programme is to address the status of Irish as a modern working language in the European Union.

Graduates are eligible for taught masters courses in a variety of fields including Languages and Linguistics. In addition graduates are prepared for MLitt and PhD programmes.

Stage 1

Students are pre-registered to 4 core modules and should register to 1 language block and 3 or 4 options (depending on language block). All students are strongly encouraged to balance their workload evenly across both trimesters i.e. 30 credits per trimester.
In addition to the language block, students can choose to take a second language (15 credits) from the culture block option list. For advice on which level to take i.e. beginner or non-beginner, please look for advice from the Pathway Coordinator or Programme Manager.

Stage 2

Students are pre-registered to four core linguistics modules (20 credits). Students should also choose 20 credits from their language and a minimum of 2 options (10 credits) from the Pathway Options list. All students are strongly encouraged to balance their workload evenly across both trimesters i.e. 30 credits per trimester.

Stage 3

The following options are available to all students at stage 3:

Option 1: Full Year Abroad (60 credits)

Option 2: Trimester Internship (30 credits, 1/2 year) and Trimester Abroad (30 credits, 1/2 year)

Option 3: Trimester Internship (30 credits, 1/2 year) and Trimester in UCD (30 credits, 1/2 year - 25 programme credits and 5 elective credits)

Option 4: Trimester Abroad (30 credits, 1/2 year) and Trimester in UCD (30 credits, 1/2 year - 25 programme credits and 5 elective credits)

Option 5: Full Year at UCD (60 credits - 50 programme credits and 10 elective credits)

All students are strongly encouraged to balance their workload evenly across both trimesters i.e. 30 credits per trimester.

Stage 4

Students are pre-registered to three core linguistics modules (20 credits).
