Curricular information is subject to change.

The Irish dairy industry is in a time of significant change, following the abolition of EU milk quotas on March 31, 2015. This change brings significant challenges and opportunities for young,  highly skilled graduates from the Dairy Business programme.

This degree is designed to equip future leaders of the dairy industry with the scientific, technical and business skills needed to cope with this business and enterprise expansion.

The BAgrSc Dairy Business programme aims to provide students with a high level of scientific, technical and business knowledge and skills relevant to those entering the dairy industry. We encourage our students to think critically, be active, motivated, autonomous learners and our ambition is to foster lifelong learning, leadership, and individual and career growth. We aim to provide learning environments that integrate teaching, research, assessment and learning, individually and through group activities so as to develop leadership, critical and reflective practice, effective communication and enquiry skills. The diversity of learning environments (off campus, classroom, work placement) and methods ensure that students have a stimulating learning experience, which should equip them with the skills necessary to provide professional leadership and support for this expanding and dynamic dairy industry. The programme aims to be integral component in ensuring the continued success of the Irish dairy industry. To achieve the aims of the programme, a research-based learning approach is employed, incorporating a diverse range of teaching and assessment methods such as case studies, group work, project work and work placements.

1 - Demonstrate strong business and leadership skills, and an in‐depth knowledge of core issues related to dairy production
2 - Analyse systems of production both from the biological/technical and financial perspectives, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and make recommendations for remedial action as appropriate
3 - Understand the dairy industry in Ireland, the context in which it operates and its relationship to dairy industries internationally
4 - Implement knowledge to offer well‐founded advice on sustainable dairy systems, incorporating knowledge of current and future policy constraints
5 - Demonstrate an ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems
6 - Use strong communication skills, both written and oral
7 - Use their knowledge of the scientific method to devise, analyse, interpret and report on scientific investigations
8 - Develop and utilise a wide range of generic skills useful in further career development through specific class exercises and PWE.

PWE takes place between July and December (first trimester, third year) and offers you the opportunity to visit New Zealand at the busiest time of the dairy farming calendar.

In addition to the highly skilled role of dairy farm management, opportunities exist in a wide variety of areas including:

  • Research
  • Animal feed industry
  • Banking
  • Teaching
  • Consultancy

Research opportunities to Master’s and PhD level are available.
