Students are assessed through a mixture of end-of-semester exams, attendance record, continuous assessment, dissertations and recitals/concerts.

Music at UCD covers four main areas of study:
Musicology embraces the historical and cultural study of music Ethnomusicology explores world music and music in culture Music theory deals with the analysis of musical structure Students can participate for credit in the four performing ensembles: the UCD Choral Scholars; the UCD Symphony Orchestra; the UCD Philharmonic Choir; and the UCD Gamelan Ensemble

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.
