This masters merges manufacturing technical and technological aspects with innovation and entrepreneurship teaching, in the context of the global societal challenges, such as circular economy, industrial innovation and sustainability. It is a double degree programme, coordinated by EIT Manufacturing Master School, between UCD and other universities around Europe i.e. Aalto University, Finland, Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN), France, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Italian Switzerland (SUPSI), Switzerland, Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP), France and Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria. The first year is spent at UCD (entry university) and the second year is spent at another (exit) university as listed above. 

Students choose one of four majors offered as part of the programme i.e.

  • Additive manufacturing for Full Flexibility,
  • Zero-Defect Manufacturing for a Circular Economy,
  • Digital Manufacturing for Innovative Ecosystems
  • Data Science and AI for Competitive Manufacturing.

Zero Defect Manufacturing for a Circular Economy is a combination of studying manufacturing science including physics of equipment and processes, data analysis, including the methodology to use gained process data in the context of process quality, and process management including the flexibility enabled for smaller lot production. During the programme students will gain new skills in these areas.

  • In manufacturing science, relevant fields include main thermal and mechanical processing technologies, with special reference to new processes with growing industrial importance and applied in different sectors, including automotive, aerospace, biomedical and energy.
  • In data analysis, relevant fields include modelling, monitoring and improvement methods to design and manage data in industrial and service scenarios.
  • In process management, relevant fields include analysis, design, and implementation of business and industrial processes as well as their business performance.

Students will have a solid background with well-founded scientific knowledge with a significant technical and application content, favouring immediate entrance to job market. Typical functions of a ZD engineer includes quality management, design and management of manufacturing processes, industrial installations as well as production and logistics systems, maintenance management.

About This Course

The unique factors that this programme offers to all students include:

  4. Core technology areas combined with structured training in innovation and entrepreneurship, and

Graduates will:

  • Be able to implement the gained engineering expertise in zero-defect to create new or improved methods, techniques, products, and services in the field.        
  • Be able to utilise modeling, monitor and improvement methods to design and manage data in industrial and service scenarios.    
  • Be able to use gained process data in the context of process quality, and process management including the flexibility enabled for smaller lot production.    
  • Be able to think out-of-the-box to find innovative solutions to real-world problems and to come up with new ideas;    
  • Be able to draw up plans and to make decisions foreseeing future consequences from a scientific, ethical, and societal perspective;    
  • Be able to turn innovations in the area into feasible and successful business solutions.    
  • Be able to profitably work in small size teams and contexts by taking into account all relevant elements and showing effective decision-making and leadership abilities.

There is strong demand throughout Europe for graduates of manufacturing degree programmes to be better equipped for the marketplace than their predecessors have been. There is strong need for graduates to have direct experience of industry, to have a practical awareness of important developments within the sectors of Europe’s manufacturing industry (e.g., increased digitalisation, demands of Industry 4.0, growth of additive manufacturing and robotics, etc.), to have a greater awareness of innovation & entrepreneurship, combined with an international perspective that is the direct result of personal experiences. The ME Manufacturing Engineering will prepare you for high level technical positions, Innovation roles and business profiles, including the capability to create your own start-up. It will also allow you to create a professional network at national and international level through the several initiatives and the EIT alumni communities.

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.

"This European and intersectoral mobility postgraduate programme is strongly oriented towards innovation and entrepreneurship (30 credits out of the 120 expected over the 2 year duration), including a dedicated summer school which will rotate between university partners. The strong industry component is reinforced by industry projects, the Master thesis and a potential internship. The objective of the Master School is to train the future European leaders in manufacturing, combining digital and technical manufacturing skills to meet the needs of European SMEs and multinationals alike. Students will be delivered a double Master degree after spending one year in two of the seven universities which shaped up this ambitious and prestigious training programme, along with a EIT Manufacturing certificate. UCD will welcome students participating in this programme next September 2022 for the first year of their Master studies. The students will spend their second year at other partner universities."

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits.

Accepted bachelors degrees include: B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computational Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering or equivalent degrees.

Students should have basic competence in engineering analysis, production operations, and mathematics including calculus, algebra, and mathematical statistics.
