UCD London Architecture Reception

From Richview to London!
UCD Alumni Relations are delighted to announce an evening seminar and reception exploring and celebrating the contribution UCD architecture graduates have made in London.
The reception will take place in the Alan Baxter Gallery (Cowcross St, London), commencing at 6:30pm. The evening will feature a welcome from Prof. Hugh Campbell, Head of the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy UCD, followed by presentations from several of UCD's most celebrated architecture alumni including Sheila O'Donnell, John Tuomey, Niall McLaughlin and Kevin Bates, accompanied by a wine reception.
This event is sponsored by the College of Engineering and Architecture and the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, UCD, with additional support from a private donor.
All UCD alumni and guests are welcome, but capacity is limited so please be sure to book your place as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey
Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey founded O’Donnell + Tuomey in 1988. They have built widely in Ireland, exhibited at the Venice Biennale, and received the 2015 Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects. They have a particular interest in cultural, social and educational projects. Recent buildings include Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork; Sean O'Casey Community Centre, Dublin; Timberyard Social Housing, Dublin; Lyric Theatre, Belfast; and the London School of Economics Saw Swee Hock Student Centre. They are currently working on campus redevelopment for Central European University in Budapest, a new cultural and education quarter in Stratford, East London, which includes new buildings for the Victoria and Albert Museum and Sadler’s Well Theatre, and an Academic Hub and Library for the Dublin Institute of Technology. Both are Professors of Architectural Design at University College Dublin.
Niall McLaughlin
Niall McLaughlin was born in Geneva in 1962. He was educated in Dublin and received his architectural qualifications from University College Dublin in 1984. He worked for Scott Tallon Walker in Dublin and London between 1984 and 1989. He established his own practice in London in 1990. Niall McLaughlin Architects make high quality modern buildings with a special emphasis on materials and detail. Niall won Young British Architect of the Year in 1998, he was one of the BBC Rising Stars in 2001 and his work represented Britain in a US exhibition Gritty Brits at the Carnegie Mellon Museum. His designs have won many awards in the UK, Ireland and the US, including RIAI Best Building in the Landscape and the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award for the Best Building under £1million in 2005 and 2015 and was on the RIBA Stirling Shortlist 2013 and 2015. Niall is a professor of architecture at University College London as well as a visiting professor at the University of California Los Angeles from 2012-2013 and appointed Lord Norman Foster Visiting Professor of Architecture, Yale for 2014-2015. He was chair of the RIBA Awards Group from 2007 to 2009 and was made a Honorary Royal Designer for Industry in 2015. He lives in London with his wife Mary son Diarmaid and daughter Iseult.
Kevin Bates
Kevin Bates is a Director of Scott Tallon Walker Architects and is former winner of both the RIAI Triennial Gold Medal and AAI Downes Medal. He has extensive experience of working across a range of international Healthcare, Science & Research and Higher Education Buildings. Kevin has successfully delivered some of STW’s most complex Science and Research Projects such as the Tyndall National Institute for National University of Ireland, Cork. From 2010 to 2014 Kevin was the Manager of STW’s Middle East Office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where he oversaw the development of STW’s Middle East portfolio including the King Saud University Sports Campus and the King Abdulla Institute for Nanotechnology. Now, based in London, Kevin is a Project Director on University College London Hospital’s new Proton Therapy Centre and Cancer Hospital and is responsible for the growth and development of the London office both locally and internationally. Kevin has tutored in both Cork Centre for Architectural Education (UCC) and in the King Saud University College of Architecture.
