The ME (Materials Science and Engineering) Degree Programme is offered both as a 2-Year Single-Stage 120-Credit Masters Programme, and as a 1-Year Single Stage 90-Credit Masters Programme for students with 30 RPL Credits. Students must consult with and obtain prior approval of the Programme Coordinator before registering to their modules. Mode 1: 2-Year ME @ 120 CREDITS - Students on the 2-Year Programme are required to take 60 credits in Year 1 and Year 2 with a balanced workload of 30 credits per Semester in EACH YEAR. For the Year Long ME MSE Project Module (MEEN40740) in YEAR TWO, students are recommended to allocate 10 Credits to Semester 1 and 15 Credits to Semester 2 when calculating the contribution of MEEN40740 to their Semester Credits for Year 2. The Structure for Students on the 2-Year Programme is set out in Panels A), B), C) and D) below. Mode 2: 1-Year ME @ 90 CREDITS - Students with 30 RPL on the 1-Year Programme must take 90 Credits with a balanced workload of 30 credits in Semesters 1, 2 and 3. If students with 30 RPL have previously taken any of their specified Core Modules, they must select additional Option Modules to make up the total of 30 credits for Semester 1 and Semester 2. The Structure for students on the 1-Year Programme is set out in Panels E), F) and G) below. Note that students on the 1-Year programme do not undertake a Profession Work Experience (PWE) Placement.

Graduates from this programme will be fully qualified professional engineers, capable of working anywhere in the world at an advanced technical level.

  • Focus on real-world materials used for the manufacture of advanced engineered components and systems such as biomedical implants.
  • Integrated theoretical, conceptual and practical knowledge.
  • Technical research project in collaboration with world leading research groups and researchers.

This programme is aimed at students with a primary degree in engineering or cognate physical science who wish to develop a career or engage with further studies in materials science and engineering leading to a professionally accredited qualification. We value and therefore encourage students to be engaged, autonomous learners who have a critical and problem-solving approach to materials as they are used in both common and advanced engineering applications. Of key importance within the learning experience is the ability of the student to work individually or within teams and to communicate their ideas and outcomes effectively. Students should also not lose sight of the ethical, environmental or human perspectives within which they work. We aim to provide a stimulating learning environment with a wide-ranging and relevant taught curriculum that is underpinned by a hands-on laboratory experience that will encourage students to develop a deep understanding of structure-property relationships in materials. A significant period of structured internship at an industrial partner is a key component of the programme. A variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies are used to achieve the desired outcomes including individual and team assignments, technical presentations, internship assessment and a significant supervised research project. These are subject to assessment on both a continuous and end-of-trimester basis.

If you are a graduate of the ME Materials Science and Engineering programme you can look forward to limitless employment opportunities in leading companies of the manufacturing, biomedical, aerospace, energy and electronic sectors. Manufacturing accounts for 24% of Irish economic output and employs 20% of the Irish workforce directly or indirectly. Ireland’s aerospace and aviation industry is worth over €4.1 billion to the Irish economy, and there are more than 250 companies involved in the aerospace, aviation and space sectors in Ireland, providing employment for around 42,000 full-time workers. Moreover, Ireland hosts 18 of the world’s top 25 medtech companies and a multi-national semi-conductor manufacturing company (Intel Leixlip), overall employing over 40,000 people. UCD materials graduates have taken up roles such as data scientist, manufacturing engineer, development engineer, and research engineer, in different industrial sectors including aerospace (General Electric, Rolls Royce, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics), electronics (Intel), biomedical (Boston Scientific, Stryker, DePuy Synthes) and energy (Siemens).

Stage 1

The ME (Materials Science and Engineering) Degree Programme is offered as a two-year 2-Stage 120-Credit Masters Programme. Students must consult with and obtain prior approval of the Programme Director before registering to their modules.
Students are required to take 60 credits in each Stage (Year) of their programme with a balanced workload of 30 credits per trimester.

Stage 2

Stage 2 (Year 2) of the ME Materials Science & Engineering comprises 60 credits with a balanced workload of 30 credits per trimester.
In Stage 2 (Year 2), students will undertake a 2-trimester duration project module (ME MSE Project Module (MEEN40740)). All students are recommended to allocate 10 credits of MEEN40740 to the Autumn Trimester and 15 credits to the Spring Trimester when calculating the contribution of MEEN40740 to their Trimester credit workload for Stage 2.

Below is a list of all modules offered for this degree in the current academic year. Click on the module to discover what you will learn in the module, how you will learn and assessment feedback profile amongst other information.

Incoming Stage 1 undergraduates can usually select an Elective in the Spring Trimester. Most continuing undergraduate students can select up to two Elective modules (10 Credits) per stage. There is also the possibility to take up to 10 extra Elective credits.
