Room Description: Active Learning Room
Pedagogical Guidelines: To enhance the teaching and learning experience in active learning rooms consider the following:
1. Discuss and agree ground rules for working in this space (e.g. everyone to participate in group work, responsibility for completing project tasks, encouragement of different ideas and viewpoints).
2. Decide which form of enquiry/problem/project/team/task –based learning you will use to maximize the active learning opportunities in this space. Introduce students to your chosen approach outlining: the rationale for this approach; the specific learning process; student roles and responsibilities; timescales and practical issues.
3. Consider showing a video of a previous group using this space.
4. Encourage the groups to use the whiteboards/flipchart paper as a shared learning environment for the small groups.
5. Do not rely solely on oral instruction. Rather use the multiple screens in the room to provide written clarity of the task and key guidelines.
6. Move around the groups to get feedback on how the different groups are performing the task.
7. Make and share a very detailed timetable to include lecture input, small groupwork and feedback of some or all the small groups to the large group.
8. For further ideas see A Practitioner’s Guide to Enquiry and Problem-based Learning : Case Studies for University College Dublin on the UCD Teaching & Learning website.
