Room Description: Theatre
Pedagogical Guidelines: To enhance the teaching and learning experience in lecture theatres consider the following:
1. Linking new knowledge to old knowledge facilitates effective learning. Help students to ground themselves in this large space and orient themselves to new knowledge by connecting the new material with the old material.
2. Consider starting with a hook to engage their attention e.g. a question, story, video-clip, physical object or visual.
3. Help students to organize this new knowledge and remain attentive by sharing the learning objectives, sequence of content and plan for the lecture.
4. As the brain’s capacity for focused attention is limited to 20 minutes, divide up the lecture into sections alternating between lecture input, activities, discussion, Q & A plenary etc.
5. Provide the students with interactive slide handouts with space for them to write their own notes, questions and examples.
6. Consider doing Think-Pair-Share. Give the students a question or challenge. Firstly, ask them to think about it quietly, writing down their main points. Secondly ask them to discuss it in pairs comparing and contrasting their responses. Thirdly, ask some people to share their response with the larger group.
7. See Large Group Teaching Strategies on the UCD Teaching & Learning website for further ideas.

Active Learning Tip:
Invite ‘student response’ technologically (e.g. clickers, Socrative etc) or manually (e.g. a show of hands).
