Overview

This seminar will help you understand the complex area of research impact, including the impact your work can have within academia, as well as its wider impact on society and the economy. It will also address how to work with research stakeholders to enable greater impact.

Content

In the seminar, we will discuss the concept of societal and economic impact, and introduce the UCD Impact Toolkit which is designed to help you plan, evidence and communicate your impact. We will cover tools to help you identify your research stakeholders and understand how you can involve them in your research to improve research relevance. We will guide you through citations, metrics and publication strategies for academic impact, including how to use metrics responsibly to build reputation.

The workshop is open to all post-doctoral and academic staff at UCD, regardless of discipline.

Areas covered:

1. Societal and economic impact

  • What is impact and why is it important in the current funding landscape?
  • Using the UCD Impact Toolkit.
  • Writing effective impact statements and case studies.


2. Engaging with external stakeholders for impact

  • What is engaged research and how can it benefit my research?
  • How to identify and prioritise research stakeholders.
  • How stakeholders can improve research value and impact.
  • Where to find support.


3. Academic impact and metrics

  • What is bibliometrics?
  • Metrics and tools (and their strengths and weaknesses).
  • Choosing appropriate metrics.
  • Increasing visibility and citation impact.


Learning Outcomes

  • Understand engaged research, research impact, metrics and their importance.
  • Be able to improve and communicate the (potential) impact of your research for society.
  • Be aware of UCD’s engaged research, impact and bibliometrics resources.
  • Be able to use metrics (responsibly) to build reputation.
