General Information

Gender Identity and Expression Training

* This course counts towards the digital EDI Ambassador Badge *

Overview:

UCD EDI are hosting a training session in collaboration with ShoutOut (November) and LGBTIreland (May) to raise awareness about this topic (and to mark Trans Awareness Week and IDAHOBIT.)

This 3.5-hour session explores the theory behind gender identity, gender expression and biological sex, looking in detail at language and experiences of trans and intersex identities. Through a mix of presentation and interactive moments, we'll explore barriers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and how we might work to create more inclusive spaces for gender diversity in the Higher Education space.

Topics covered include:

  • Best practice language around gender identity, gender expression and biological sex
  • Trans identities
  • Intersex identities
  • Inclusive language
  • LGBTQ+ inclusion in Higher Education

Feedback:

  • Excellent and hugely insightful session”
  • “Thank you for this valuable, inclusive and enjoyable session. I really appreciate that the EDI Unit is providing opportunities like this to educate our staff and faculty about such important and sensitive topics.”

About the Provider

ShoutOut are Ireland's largest provider of LGBTQ+ workshops to schools, which they have been providing since 2012. Their volunteers travel around the country to give participants information and ask questions concerning LGBTQ+ related issues, and to address issues of bullying and discrimination in schools and workplaces. Their workshops cover a range of issues, and are at the forefront of LGBTQ+ teaching by adapting to recent research and current affairs. The content included has also been reviewed by related organisations including DCU, Foroige, and TENI to ensure all issues are covered and treated accurately and sensitively.

Collette has been working with LGBT Ireland since 2017. As Senior Training & Advocacy Manager she is responsible for internal training (helpline volunteers, peer support group facilitators) and external training (delivering LGBT Awareness training to various service providers). Strong priorities in Collette’s advocacy role are peer support to and advocacy on LGBTI+ asylum seekers living in Direct Provision; visibility and inclusion of LGBTI+ Travellers & Roma in key support services; and older LGBT+ people’s visibility/inclusion through the LGBT Champions Programme. Collette’s professional background is community development, community & adult education and grassroots advocacy.
