An Introduction to ArcGIS Online

 

General Information

Description:

In this two hour hands-on workshop, step-by-step guidance will show you how to create maps in ArcGIS Online.  We will use data downloaded from various sources, spreadsheets and add our own data from scratch.

This is an introductory workshop which will be held in-person and is designed for those with little or no GIS experience.

 

Objectives:

By the end of the session, you will have completed the following activities:

  • Display some admin boundary data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on a map
  • Import wodland data from the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) and create a thematic map from this data
  • Work with layers, symbols and labels
  • Create and add new point data (a point represents a feature) to show on a map
  • Use some of the analysis tools to carry out tasks, e.g., creating a buffer
  • Add data in csv files to show on the map and create routes
  • Share your ArcGIS Online map

 

Who should attend?

This course will be of interest to administrative staff and students or researchers who would like to learn the basic skills required to create a map using ArcGIS Online. 

 

ESSENTIAL Preparation prior to this workshop:

 

  1. Getting an ArcGIS Online account

ArcGIS Online does not require the installation of software, however it does require you to have an ArcGIS Online account. IT WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS WORKSHOP WITHOUT AN ACCOUNT.

 

You can request an ArcGIS Online account by submitting a request via UCD's IT Support Hub page https://fujitsuireland.service-now.com/itucd  - from this page login with your UCD Connect details.

In your request ask that your ArcGIS Online account is set up with the following User Type and Role:

User Type: GIS Professional Advanced and Role: Publisher

When you are notified that your account has been set up please check that you can login with your username and password here:  https://ucdireland.maps.arcgis.com

Please ensure you send your request to IT Services at least 2 full days before the workshop to ensure that IT Services have time to respond to your request.
