Irish & International Design, Fashion and Decorative Arts

This National Museum-based course looks at a number of extraordinary people who shaped and continue to shape Irish and international design, fashion and decorative arts in the 19 th – 21 st centuries. What inspired them? What motivated them? What legacy had their work?


NMI curators will take you on ‘behind-the-scenes’ tours and provide illustrated talks as a starting point for discussion around the work and lives of remarkable individuals such as designer Eileen Gray, collector Albert Bender and fashion designer Ib Jorgensen.

This is a chance to get up close up to the fascinating displays and objects from the National Museum’s decorative arts collections, and to hear the amazing stories behind them. Join in and be enthused, dazzled and inspired!

Dr Audrey Whitty is Keeper of the National Museum’s Art and Industrial Division, which encompasses
all decorative arts, design and history collections.

Dr Jennifer Goff has curated and widely published on the Museum’s Eileen Gray and furniture
collections.

As Curator of clothes, textiles and jewellery at NMI, Alex Ward has curated exhibitions on the work
of fashion designers, Neillí Mulcahy and Ib Jorgensen and lectures on a number of different topics
relating to Irish dress history and Irish textiles.

Dr Edith Andrees is a historian, Museum Educator and the Schools & Lifelong Learning coordinator at
NMI – Decorative Arts & History.

Week 1, Brief introduction to course, including handling objects: Dr Edith Andrees
Dr Audrey Whitty: Albert Bender and the National Museum’s Asian Art collection. Includes
an introduction to the National Museum’s decorative arts collections and collecting history.

Week 2, Dr Jennifer Goff: Eileen Gray, 20 th century interior design, architecture and
furniture.

Week 3, Alex Ward: Ib Jorgensen, 20 th century fashion design.

Week 4, Dr Audrey Whitty: Kathleen Cox and contemporary makers – from art deco to
decorative arts, crafts and design today. (Closing remarks Dr Edith Andrees).
