Title: Mary Hayden Prize
Award Type: Prize
Programme Description:
Long Description: The introduction of the 4 year BA programme, DN530, will lead to an increasing emphasis on dissertations as part of the undergraduate programme in History. In the past, the dissertation has been offered only to students taking Single Subject History; from 2022 onwards, the dissertation will be offered as the heart of final year study in five DN530 pathways (Single Subject History; Classics, English & History; History & Politics; European Studies; Global Studies).
The award signals to undergraduates the value the School places on dissertations and undergraduate research, and mirrors the emphasis that is placed at programme level on the dissertation as a capstone that marks the culmination of students’ skills and learning during the degree.
History departments in other institutions have similar awards. Recipients of these awards benefit when they apply for postgraduate research scholarships, as the award is testimony to the excellent quality of their research, both in historical and potentially interdisciplinary perspective. The recording of the prize on the student’s transcript is an important consideration in the prize’s value.
The award is named after Mary Hayden, the first professor of modern Irish history at UCD between 1911 and 1938. It recognises her role in developing the discipline at UCD and her wider impact in campaigning for women’s rights in Ireland in the first decades of the 20th century.
