Long Description: This medal is in recognition of the contribution to Veterinary Public Health made by the late Professor John Hannan, former Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (1984-1990). Professor Hannan played a leading role in the development and promotion of Veterinary Public Health and was a leading proponent of the discipline at national and international level. He was a member of the inaugural Board of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Vice-President of the World Association of Veterinary Food Hygienists and was a Consultant in Food Hygiene to the World Health Organisation. He served on numerous other consultative bodies on veterinary education and related matters.

The John Hannan Medal is to be awarded annually to the student who, having passed his/her first sitting at the University Examinations, obtains the overall highest grades in Veterinary Public Health and Food Hygiene.
