Long Description: Ambrose Birmingham was Dean and Professor of Anatomy at the Catholic University of Ireland Medical School from 1887 to 1905. Through his zeal and ability, the school was modernised and survived the long critical period from 1880 to 1909. The Birmingham Medal is a token of the debt owed by the University for this contribution to the continuity of its traditions. This fund has been greatly augmented by gifts from the Archbishops of Dublin. The medal celebrates the one of our School's early professors of Anatomy. It is awarded to the student who displays the greatest knowledge of Anatomical Science as judged by a demanding written paper and Viva Voce
