Assignment | A formal task (written or otherwise) which typically has a deadline attached but is not carried out under timed conditions. |
Attendance | Engagement in discussion or oral presentation. Examples of participation and presentation might include contributions to in-class discussions, debates or oral presentations. See reg. 4.9 |
Class Test | Short questions or tasks designed to assess knowledge, the application of knowledge, analytical, problem-solving or evaluative skills in class. |
Continuous Assessment | Involves the evaluation of a student's progress and attainment throughout the course of delivery of a module. |
Essay | An exercise completed in writing, that typically have deadlines attached but which are not carried out under timed conditions. |
Examination | A written, timed examination, undertaken within a constrained period of time in a set location, following a rubric of instruction that is subject to invigilation. |
Fieldwork | Focuses on whether, and/or how well, a student performs a specific practical skill or technique (or competency) in the field. |
Group Project | An assignment based on a group work task, where the product (project, report, artefact,..) and/or the process (contribution, participation, reflection on learning) are graded for the individual and/or for the group. |
Journal | Reflection by student on own experiences, views and suggestions for action on their learning or work/life experience. |
Lab Report | A description, summary or other account of an experiment, experience or activity in the lab. |
Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) | An MCQ examination is where a student is provided with a range of questions or statements with a number of possible answers, where one or more of the answers are correct responses and the other answers are distractors. Typically used where the assessment is of low weighting and is held throughout the trimester. |
Oral Examination | An assessment which tests a student's achievement of a particular set of learning outcomes through the medium of spoken communication. |
Portfolio | An assessment of a collection of materials compiled by student. It may include reflection, evidence of activity and/or other materials. It may also include individual and/or group elements. |
Practical Examination | This is a participatory activity where assessment is generally skills based. It may also include a written element. |

Project | This is an individual assessment which may involve the design, completion and presentation of an activity. |
Seminar | This is a discussion based task conducted in, or based on work conducted in a small group setting. |
Studio Examination | This involves assessment of activity completed in a studio setting. This may involve a performance and/or design component, presented through visual or verbal media. |
