The course will provide students with no previous knowledge or experience of Human Resource Management (HRM) with an understanding of key issues and debates in the field of HRM at present. HRM is concerned with the management of people within organisations in a range of marketeconomies. Instead of the passive or reactive approaches to staffing that characterised personnel and industrial relations management previously, there has emerged a new movement to develop proactive strategies that link staff management with the wider business strategies. Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module, students will be expected to be able to:
Explain the origins of HRM as a `distinctive and strategic' approach to the management of people.
Illustrate the use of alternative policy options for the management of human resources using examples.
Critically assess the contribution of HR theory to the management of employees in organisations.
Recognise ethical and social responsibility issues in the business environment and examinme ehthical and legal implications of managerial decisions and their effect on organisational stakeholders.
