FIN40490 Advanced Treasury Management/Financial Engineering

The major objective of this course is to assist students to develop a systematic understanding of issues related to finance decisions in any treasury environment and gain skills in solving practical problems. Leaders should be able to assess international capital markets and recognise opportunities to create value and manage risks. They need to develop a framework to price risks and understand the information being provided by capital markets. Important areas are the time value of money; build a portfolio of investment grade investment bonds and pricing of market risks. Opportunities in utilities markets will be identified amongst other emerging asset classes of project finance for infrastructure. This course suits students who wish to develop a logical and consistent framework for solving finance problems in practical situations with the treasury participation in capital markets providing critical input.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course, students are expected to:
1. Understand various forms of market structures and securities, interactions and their implications for financial
managers
2. Be able to generate a valuation range for a project, enterprise or a company with multiples and
discounted cash flow valuation approach
3. Understand the value impact of capital structure
4. Be conversant with the incentives for and mechanics of issuing and buying back securities
5. Understand the basics of portfolio construction and control
6. Use Excel to conduct a discounted cash flow analysis of a business financial model
