This module aims to provide advanced insights into the theory, practices, processes, and current thinking in Procurement and Supplier Management. This is a skills-based module, where, like Procurement and Supplier Managers, you will learn to provide feedback to other's on their work; produce reports advising companies on the latest developments in Procurement and Supplier Management issues; present in an open forum on current affairs; and produce a professional business report and presentation as part of a group. We will explore the latest issues in Procurement Strategy, Strategic Sourcing, Outsourcing, Relationship Management, International Developments, Information and Disclosure in Procurement, Sustainable Procurement and Ethical Issues in Procurement and Supplier Management.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module, students will be expected to:
1. Discuss Procurement and Supplier Management issues relating to current affairs;
2. Concisely apply the current theory of Procurement and Supplier Management to practice;
3. Display creative thinking skills including integrating differing streams of knowledge;
4. Write a professional business report on a Procurement and Supplier Management issue;
5. Work as part of a team to produce a Procurement and Supplier Management business report and present your findings.

INTRODUCTION
Week 1 (14th Sept): Introduction to Procurement and Supplier Management Module and Skills
In this session we will discuss the upcoming module and the key skills in procurement and supplier management.

CONTEXT
Week 2 (21st Sept): Procurement Development
This session will look at the historical development of procurement from the craft era through to the lean era.

STRATEGY
Week 3 (28th Sept): Strategic Procurement and Supplier Management
This session examines the meaning of strategic procurement and the procurement strategies that different companies and their supply chains adopt.

INTERACTIONS
Week 4 (5th Oct): Strategic Sourcing
The latest thinking on selecting and evaluating suppliers.

Week 5 (12th Oct): Outsourcing
From the make-buy decision to the process of outsourcing

Week 6 (19th Oct): Relationship Management
This session looks at the latest research on managing different types of supplier relationship.

Week 7 (26th Oct): International and Cross-Cultural Procurement
Strategies and techniques for managing procurement across international boundaries and cultures.

Week 8 (2nd Nov): October Bank Holiday: Autonomous learning week

ANALYSIS AND IMPROVEMENT

Week 9: (9th Nov): Supplier Information and Disclosure
This session will focus on what, why and how to gather, analyse and report on supplier information

Week 10 (16th Nov): Sustainability Issues in Procurement and Supplier Management
What is the latest procurement thinking and practice in sustainability both social and environmental?

Week 11 (23rd Nov): Ethical Procurement & Supplier Management
Engendering ethical behaviour throughout the supply chain: the latest research and best practice.

CONCLUSION

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Individual Report Feedback Feedback on your reports will be given by myself or one of the teaching team within 20 days of the hand in date. This will take the form of general feedback or advice for the class as well as individual feedback on your assignment. Peer review feedback and 360-degree learning After each report hand in you will also read and evaluate one of your colleagues’ reports. You will give them a grade and feedback on the report. I will send out the reports and you should complete and return the feedback. I will anonymise your feedback as much as possible and send it out to your colleagues. Instructions on how to do peer-review grading and feedback will be available on Brightspace. Outstanding peer assessments will receive an extra grade point for their individual report. Group Report Feedback Feedback on your reports will also be given by myself or one of the teaching team within 20 days of the hand in date. This will take the form of general feedback or advice for the class as well as individual feedback on your assignment. Group Presentation Feedback Feedback on your presentations will be given by myself or one of the teaching team within 20 days of the hand in date. This will take the form of general feedback of advice for the class as well as individual feedback on your assignment. Feedback on Current Affairs Feedback on current affairs will be general feedback to the class and written feedback at the end of the trimester when all current affairs articles are uploaded and presentations are completed.

Two journal articles will be the key readings for each session. These articles will be uploaded the week before. This is to allow the same time for everyone to complete the assignments related to the readings.

Further reading in the form of journal articles is expected in your assignments. Journals are produced quarterly, unlike trade magazines that appear monthly or weekly.
