This course critically assesses the issue of workplace learning. It provides a forum for discussing the context within which human resource development (HRD) takes place, the linkage of HRD and business strategy, how HRD adds value, the changing role of the HRD practitioner, approaches to identifying and meeting learning and development needs and new developments and trends in meeting HRD needs. Topics covered will include: strategic `business-led' human resource development, HRD roles and relationships, learning and transfer of learning, the concept of blended learning (training, e-learning, development processes), career management, workplace learning in an international context, assessing workplace learning strategies.The module provides for the blending of the theory and practice of HRD with the workplace experiences of the participants and to this end participants will be expected to contribute critical reflection on their workplace experiences. Advance preparation for classes will be an important feature, with readings, case preparation and questions for reflection assigned at the commencement of the trimester.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this module, students should be able todefine the parameters of workplace learning and its relationship with human resource managementargue the case for a strategic business-led approach to workplace learning and to identify the principal components of such an approach - distinguish the various players in HRD, compare and contrast their respective roles and identify the competencies required to effectively execute these rolesdetail the conditions that facilitate learning and the transfer of learning and show evidence of their ability to integrate key learning principles into consideration/ discussion of different HRD practicesidentify the organisation-wide learning issues facing different types of organisations and to evaluate the learning strategies that can contribute to the overall direction of these organisations as well as benefiting the individual learnersillustrate the key stages in career planning and development and assess the factors that contribute to variations in career management outcomes

Students will attend classes for this module and have the opportunity to engage in active learning during these sessions. There will be in-class discussion and group work to analyse module concepts. Where appropriate, the module will incorporate case based learning
