ProfCert Mathematics for Data Analytics and Statistics

UG Certificates & Diplomas (level 8 nfq)

The Professional Certificate in Mathematics for Data Analytics and Statistics is designed for those who wish to study the Data Analytics and Statistics programmes run by the School of Mathematics and Statistics but do not have the mathematical pre-requisites. We provide the students with the foundational mathematical methods in calculus and linear algebra which will enable them to proceed onto our more advanced programmes. The programme commences in May each year. There are no lectures to attend as the modules are delivered completely online over the summer trimester. Students must attend UCD in person for exams in August.

This course is specifically designed for those who wish to eventually take the postgraduate data analytics and statistics programmes offered by the school but have not studied any mathematics at degree level.

Data Analysts are in strong demand from industry; this course allows students to pick up the foundational mathematics required for entry into the Online Professional Diploma in Data Analytics, or the Higher Diploma in Statistics. Students may then carry on to complete the Online MSc in Data Analytics or Royal Statistical Society accredited MA or MSc in Statistics.

This programme is an exit strategy from the MSc in Data Analytics and is aimed at students who wish to develop a future in data analytics.

We encourage our students to have an interest in analysing large data sets, and to be autonomous learners who have a creative and critical approach to data analytics.

We aim to provide a learning environment that will encourage students to constructively solve data problems in real-world situations, using software, and to tailor such solutions to individual data sets as they arise. Online learning is a key feature of the programme, and we provide online videos and discussion boards, always backed-up by individual feedback from lecturers and tutors.

At the most advanced levels of the programme, students are encouraged and expected to use and apply cutting-edge techniques from the latest research in their work.

As a result of this approach to learning, the modules are assessed using a variety of tools including online assessment, individual project work to examine software-based skills, and written examinations to test mathematical ability.

  • Approach problems in an analytical, precise and rigorous way
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the skills required by a practicing data analyst.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computational methods, including computer programming and scientific visualization
  • Model real-world problems in a statistical framework
  • Please ignore
  • Use the language of logic to reason correctly and make deductions
