If you undertake a Masters degree at UCD Sutherland School of Law you will be studying at one of the Top 100 Law Schools in the World. You will be taught by leading academics where class participation and interaction is encouraged. Our innovative teaching and small class sizes will allow you to develop strong analytical skills, and to hone your written and spoken critical insights.

The LLM EU Law & Governance offers a genuine inter-disciplinary approach to European studies allowing students analyse how our understanding of the nature of the European Union is shaped by our particular disciplinary perspectives. You will acquire a number of key skills including how to understand and think critically about the intersections between law, politics and international relations that come to the fore in the study of EU law. You will learn how to apply that knowledge and understanding to real and hypothetical factual situations.

About This Course

Students on the full-time programme starting in September have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad as part of the Comparative, International and European Law (CIEL) graduate exchange programme with our partner Universities.

More information on the CIEL programme and the other exchange opportunities for Masters students are available on the School of Law website.

Please note that for timing reasons, study exchange is not possible for part-time or January start programmes.

We strive for a learning environment that encourages students to work individually or as part of a team to develop teamwork and communication skills. On completion of this programme you will have acquired the skills to:

  • Demonstrate a detailed awareness and knowledge of EU Law and Public Affairs including current debates in this area.
  • Have the intellectual toolkit required to research and write a major dissertation.
  • Integrate source material from a variety of disciplinary areas to reach reasoned decisions about the relative status of competing claims to knowledge.
  • Understand the national, European and international framework within which this area has developed
  • Unpack complex arguments in this area and to render intelligible to a non-specialist audience, key disciplinary insights.
  • Use knowledge of substantive law to advise on legal issues presented by factual situations and to evaluate and critique arguments as to whether and how the law in this field is in need of reform.

The LLM EU Law & Governance is an ideal starting point for a career in the EU institutions, such as the Commission and Court of Justice of the European Union, and EU agencies such as the Fundamental Rights Agency. It will also be highly relevant for those aiming at a career in law firms specialising in European Union law. Further, graduates will be well equipped to advise law and policy makers in European Union matters, as well as finding opportunities with think tanks and other non-governmental organisations influencing the European Union. It also is an excellent starting point for an academic career.

Masters students in UCD Sutherland School of Law can benefit from engaging both with the UCD Careers Network and the Head of Career Development in the School.  There are careers events hosted through the academic year and a specific Law Fair every October where Domestic and International Employers come on campus to meet with students.

Graham Butler

Full Professor of European Law, University of Southern Denmark

As a graduate of Business and Law, I took a keen interest in EU affairs and sought to pursue this programme in UCD in 2012. It is an ideal graduate programme for those interested in law, political, international relations, the EU and current affairs. The course offers a healthy mixture of legal subjects pertaining to the European Union, in addition to politics and international relations, which perfectly complement each other. Studying EU law in all its various forms really enhanced my education and the formulation and application of EU law throughout the EU member states.

At UCD, time spent outside the lectures is just as important as the ones inside. This masters degree offers students the opportunity to develop the edge that is vital for competing in a competitive graduate environment. Having previously worked as a parliamentary assistant in Dáil Éireann, and pursued a doctorate in law at the University of Copenhagen, I am now a Full Professor of Law at the University of Southern Denmark.
