Modern Zoology is a wide-ranging subject that deals with all aspects of animals from genetics and cell biology to ecology and behaviour. This module introduces the breadth and relevance of the discipline and subsequently focuses on the physiological systems that underpin how animals respond to biotic and abiotic challenges in their environment. The anatomical structure and function of diverse animal groups will be placed in the context of millions of years of animal evolution and closely linked laboratory sessions will use experiments and dissections to understand animal biology from the inside out.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. understand the scope of the zoology discipline
2. understand the evolution and diversity of animal groups
3. discuss how evolution has driven the structure and function of the principal physiological systems in animals
4. describe how physiological function varies in animal groups, particularly in response to environmental extremes
5. identify the principal organs governing homeostasis in a variety of animal groups
