The aim of this module is to enable students to develop the professional and clinical skills needed to transition into the veterinary nursing profession. The module will be delivered using a mixture of teaching and learning approaches including; lectures, workshops, tutorials, practical classes, and online resources. Module content in the Autumn Trimester (Sept-Dec) will be focused on the development of professional skills (associated with reflection, academic reading and writing, and lifelong learning skills). As students are on placement in the Autumn Trimester, the Autumn content is delivered entirely online. The second half of the module and content in the Spring Trimester will focus on the development of professional and clinical skills and will be delivered face to face.

Learning Outcomes:

Conduct health and safety risk assessments for various aspects of a veterinary practice setting
Practice the Reflective Practice Cycle
Demonstrate academic writing skills in the form of a report.
Appraise information from various evidence sources to inform veterinary patient care in a clinical scenario
Demonstrate development of veterinary nursing clinical skills in the areas of; medical nursing; surgical nursing; anesthesia
Demonstrate development of client and team communication skills
Identify and appreciate diversity and cultural values to allow for effective cross-cultural communication
Identify potential risks for workplace stress and discuss possible management strategies
Recognize the importance of self-care in challenging times (resilience)
Apply financial principles to business financial situations

Indicative Module Content:

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop the professional and clinical skills needed to transition into the veterinary nursing profession. Module content in the Autumn Trimester (Sept-Dec) will be focused on the development of professional skills (associated with reflection, academic reading and writing, and lifelong learning skills). Module content in the Spring Trimester (Jan-May) will be focused on the development of clinical & professional skills related to veterinary nursing in practice.
