Professional and experiential learning is an integral component of the BSc in Veterinary Nursing.
Students are required to attend their placement at a veterinary clinic or veterinary hospital for a total of 10 weeks, and to compete this experience by the end of Autumn. All placements for this module will be based in the Republic of Ireland.
During the 10 week placement, students will be expected to carry out, under direct supervision, specific veterinary nursing tasks as outlined as European Competencies (EC) in the ACOVENE European Dossier of Professional Competencies for the Veterinary Nurse (2012).

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, students will be expected to have demonstrated, and reflected on, their competence within the following domains:
EC1: Monitor and maintain health and safety

EC3: Carry out reception duties
EC4: Manage clinical environments
EC5: Provide emergency first aid to animals
EC6: Provide and administer nursing care
EC7: Support clients in caring for animals
EC8: Perform laboratory diagnostic tests
EC9: Prepare for diagnostic imaging techniques
EC10: Prepare for veterinary surgical procedures
EC11: Assist the veterinary surgeon during surgical procedures
EC12: Assist in the provision of anaesthetics to animals

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Approaches to teaching and learning include, task and case based learning along with reflective practice activities. Students will complete their Journal of Practical Skills (JPS) while on placement. Students must complete a short reflection at the end of each section of their JPS.

Learning Requirements:

Students should have completed all of the requirements of the first and second year in Veterinary Nursing

Learning Recommendations:

Students should have progressed to Stage 3 in Veterinary Nursing

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

The continuous assessment will be carried out on a one to one basis between the placement supervisor and student using the journal of practical skills. This should be completed by the end of the placement.
