This module involves a 2-week external placement in a veterinary clinical environment offered to Stage 2 Veterinary Nursing students. The module aims to continue to build on the knowledge and understanding of the role of the veterinary nurse in the veterinary practice environment established in Stage 1.

Students will continue to develop communication skills, professional behaviours and the ability to organise time. They will be provided with a list of clinical skills appropriate to their level that must be attempted by the student and signed off by their supervisors. The student will submit a reflective piece upon completion of their placement as a formative assessment.

A minimum level of attendance is required to pass this module. All assessment components must be passed.

This placement is offered in January, prior to the commencement of the Spring teaching trimester.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
Identify the variety of roles within the veterinary practice, with a particular focus on the veterinary nursing role.
Use effective communication skills with veterinary practice staff and clients.
Demonstrate professional behaviour and prioritise and organise their time effectively.
Continue to develop clinical skills including but not limited to animal husbandry and restraint, hygiene practices and medical nursing.
Develop reflective skills as they pertain to veterinary practice.

Students cannot be awarded credit for this module if they
have already achieved similar educational outcomes in higher,
further or secondary education.
