This module deals with the anatomy and physiology of species commonly seen in veterinary practice. It is a core module for stage 1 vet nursing students.

The purpose of this module is to acquire the fundamentals of normal structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) in animals, which underpin the knowledge required by vet nurses in practice.

Overarching Content covered: the cell and subcellular structure, tissue types, introduction to the microscope, anatomical terminology, the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, the eye, and the ear, the integumentary system and the endocrine system.

The course content is delivered via lectures, weekly group project tutorials (first half of trimester), practicals and independent learning both individually and in groups.

Practicals are mandatory and pre-practical content will be provided and should be read in advance.

Assessment involves a group presentation (25%), an individual write up of the group presentation topic (10%) continuous assessment - post practical assessment (15%), and a 2-hour short answer question/MCQ end of trimester assessment (50%).

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, the student will be able to:

-classify the tissue types and epithelium types found in the body
-identify tissue types and epithelium types by examining microscope images
-define anatomical locations using correct anatomical terminology
-describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the body systems taught
-explain the physiological processes of the body systems taught
-identify anatomical structures taught and determine their location in an anatomical specimen
-explore, find and appraise suitable literature to support the facts in their presentation by applying skills learned in this module
-write and reference a short essay on their group presentation topic
-evaluate and critically appraise fellow students on their group presentations by providing anonymous feedback

Anatomy and Histology (Microscopy) Practicals with Pre-Practical preparation required (watching a video).

Group Work which will involve active learning (finding, reading appraising literature, creating a presentation)

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Feedback will be provided as follows: 1. For continuous assessment answers will be provided to all students who submitted the coursework. 2. For the group presentation, the group will be provided with feedback from graders and feedback from peer evaluation. 3. For the individual write up assignment, students will be provided with individual feedback. This will be given through BrightSpace. 4. Where requested, additional feedback will be provided by the module co-ordinator.
