The learning outcomes reflect the surgical skills and competencies required for registration as a veterinary practitioner [according to the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI), European Union Legislation, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)].
An appropriate level of theoretical background knowledge and basic surgical skills are expected from final year students in veterinary surgery, specifically, and other disciplines in general. Students have been exposed to this level of knowledge and skills earlier years of the MVB curriculum. Students are strongly encouraged to revise this material prior to entry into this module.

Am I eligible to take this module?
Students taking this module will be required to undertake procedures governed by the Veterinary Practice Act 2005. Accordingly, the module is open only to students enrolled in Stage 5 of the MVB programme or MVB Graduate Entry programme. Students must have passed all modules in previous stages of the MVB programme or MVB Graduate Entry programme before being allowed to enrol for this module.
Relevant sections of the UCDVH Student Handbook should be read before attending each rotation. Students must read all relevant UCDVH protocols that apply to Small Animal Surgery.
Learning Recommendations:
Students are strongly recommended to revise relevant lecture notes and practical class information before attending rotations in this module.
