Curricular information is subject to change.

This is a 5-week module which includes the disciplines of veterinary anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, clinical and morphological pathology, microbiology and virology of small and large animals. Students will actively participate in the clinical areas by engaging in the following rotations: 2 weeks in anaesthesia, 2 weeks in Diagnostic Imaging and one week in the Clinical Pathobiology area. Rotations will be scheduled throughout the year. The rotations will provide extensive opportunities to develop appropriate problem solving, clinical, diagnostic and practical skills.

Additional information about each of the rotations including required reading material and rotation assessment methods will be available through Brightspace.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Having completed this module, students will be able to:
1 Realise the importance of the patient’s condition to anaesthetic management and be able to apply general principles of safe anaesthetic practice, including analgesia, fluid therapy and use of gaseous anaesthetic machines, to small and large animal species
2 Use clinical and electronic monitoring to evaluate and correct systemic complications that arise during general anaesthesia and recovery
3 Take and interpret diagnostic radiographs in accordance with the radiation safety guidelines
4 Demonstrate understanding of the basic principles and resultant images of ultrasonography and other alternative imaging modalities
5 Have the skills to perform a basic post-mortem examination, to identify the relevant diagnostic samples, to perform basic laboratory tests and interpret these to formulate a diagnosis
6 Comply with Health and Safety procedures, relevant to all of the above outcomes
More detailed information is available on Brightspace.

Indicative Module Content:

Students will be building upon clinical learning from previous stages and undertaking clinical rotations in:
Veterinary Anaesthesia, Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and Veterinary Clinical Pathobiology (encompassing pathology and infectious diseases) sections

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Throughout the module students will take part in group discussions, case-based discussions, group presentations, individual report preparation, and problem based learning.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

1 Relevant sections of the UCD Veterinary Hospital Student Handbook should be read before attending each rotation.
2 The Anaesthesia rotation handout should be read in advance and a copy brought to the rotation. All other documents on Blackboard should be read prior to the rotation.
3 It is mandatory to read and understand the “Code of Practice for Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine” prior to the Diagnostic Imaging rotation. This document is available on Blackboard.

Learning Recommendations:

1 Students are strongly recommended to revise relevant lecture notes and practical class information before attending rotations in this module.
2 Anaesthesia rotation: students should be able to recall pharmacology and anaesthesia lecture and practical material in detail. Physiology relevant to anaesthesia (cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, hepatic, nervous system etc) should also be revised. The rotation relies heavily on integration of clinical material from medicine, surgery and clinical pathology.
3 Diagnostic imaging rotation: the lectures, with particular attention to radiographic anatomy and the physics of the imaging modalities, should be reviewed.

• Self-assessment activities

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Clinical rotations with their associated workplace-based assessments (WBA) are a must pass, core component of this module. Their contribution to the overall module grade is weighted at 0% - see derogation listing for all final year modules. Students will receive written feedback regarding their participation in clinical rotations and their associated workplace-based assessments (WBA). Students who fail their rotations will be invited for verbal feedback. Students who fail their rotation will be offered one opportunity to repeat prior to the Programme Examination Board. Students will receive individual formative feedback on deficiencies in performing relevant direct observational procedural skills and repeated opportunities to correct these deficiencies
