This is a core 4th year module for the undergraduate MVB degree and 3rd year module for the graduate entry MVB that links closely with, and builds on, the content explored within the Veterinary Musculoskeletal and Neurology I.
The aim of the module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage common diseases affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems of companion and production animals. The lecture series provides an overview of the management of animals with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions across the species. This includes lectures and practical classes exploring infectious / parasitic diseases affecting these body systems, classes exploring the general principles of fracture management, seizure management, and the management of animals with joint disease, disc disease, brain disease, neuromuscular disease, and conditions of the foot. Through group work and discussion classes, students will learn to problem solve clinical cases based on their presenting signs. The group projects in this module are designed to build on skills learnt in the Vet Musc and Neurology I, supporting students to progress their understanding of the diagnostic investigation and management of clinical cases involving these body systems.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

• Discuss the pathobiology of important pathogens affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems of domestic animals, relating this to their clinical presentation
• Outline the typical presentation and clinical signs of common diseases affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems of domestic species
• Explain and apply basic principles of pharmacology relevant to drugs used in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems
• Construct differential diagnosis lists appropriate to individual clinical presentations across the domestic species, using this to generate an appropriate investigative plan
• Select and explain the appropriate management plan and treatment for the common diseases affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems
• Work effectively as part of a team
• Communicate information relating to animals with musculoskeletal and neurological diseases in a clear, succinct, and professional manner
• Critically reflect on their learning, using this approach to develop metacognitive skills and promote linkage between their prior knowledge and current learning, identifying strategies for success and highlighting areas for further development as they progress towards professional practice and lifelong learning

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Intra-semester on-line formative MCQs and SNAPIs will be offered to students during delivery of the module. Automated on-line feedback will be provided following completion of these exercises. Group project work will involve self- and peer-assessment along with the delivery of group / class feedback as part of this process. All students failing the assessment will be offered an opportunity to discuss their work with the Module Co-ordinator. Queries from passing students are dealt with on an individual basis.
