This 5 credit module will focus on personal development of veterinary professionals and will build upon students’ understanding of the professional attributes required to contribute as an effective member of the veterinary profession ahead of the Clinical EMS placements. There will be a specific focus on communication skills through lectures, facilitated discussions and workshops which will require student interaction and active engagement. The topics covered will range from basic communication, such as body language and listening skills, to communication in the veterinary medical context using the Calgary-Cambridge consultation model. The use of simulated clients to practice basic communication skills (and gain feedback) in the context of a veterinary consultation will be a key and mandatory part of the module. Ancillary topics including evidence based decision making, euthanasia, business finance, personal health and safety and risk assessment will also be covered.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Outline their objectives for their professional training in placements within the veterinary community and the professional conduct expected on those placements
Communicate effectively with a client in the clinical context using consultation skills to obtain an accurate and relevant history.
Discuss the legal framework and motivational and emotional barriers involved in euthanasia in large and small animal practice
Employ an effective evidence based medicine approach to clinical cases
Appraise and apply health and safety principles in a clinical setting
Apply the principles of the VCI code of professional conduct within an ethical framework to clinical cases
Reflect on issues for own personal and professional development such as diversity, dignity and respect, implicit bias and emotional intelligence
Apply business principles to a Veterinary practice with a particular focus on the cost of services and equipment.
