This module focuses on the population medicine approach to diseases of cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry as well as diseases of fish. In addition to epidemiological principles, epidemiological tools for problem solving and disease investigation at farm and broader population levels are delivered. Emphasis is placed on preventive medicine strategies and disease investigation at the herd and flock level, including the investigation and control of mastitis, lameness, calf disease, nutrition and reproduction on dairy herds. The module will prepare the students for the farm animal clinical rotations in the fifth year of the MVB degree programme.
The examination will be in multiple choice format and may include a combination of single best answer and extended matching set questions.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module the student should be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and the ability to apply a range of epidemiological principles relevant to the investigation and management of disease at farm or broader population level;
Explain how key disease prevention strategies can be applied;
Describe the basis for investigative problem-solving approaches at herd and flock level;
Demonstrate knowledge of the key "herd-level" diseases and issues relevant to cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and fish


Indicative Module Content:

Taught material is be delivered via online lectures, with the opportunity to raise questions and discuss topics online. This module involves material delivered by industry experts as well as academics from UCD.
Learning is also supported via the provision of additional online reading material.
