SURG40080 Surgery

Indicative Module Description:This twelve week module is delivered in two six week sections and spans two trimesters. It runs back to back with Medicine 1 and Medicine 2 modules. There will be an interim assessment at the end of Autumn. The aim of the module is to introduce students to the basic principles and practice of surgery, and to expose students to a wide spectrum of clinical surgery. Teaching will be in the form of clinical attachments that will have a high level of patient and team exposure. The surgery modules encompasses 12 weeks (6 weeks in Autumn and 6 weeks in Spring) of clinical rotations /attachments in UCD-Affiliated teaching hospitals, centered principally at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and St Vincent's University Hospital. Supporting this learning environment will be a series of lectures, small group tutorials, ward and outpatient teaching. Students will be required to follow patients through their clinical pathway, including participation in surgery as appropriate. A portfolio of case write-ups will form part of the assessment process.
