This is a graduate level research project representing a substantial piece of independent research in Actuarial Science. Students will have two options for completing this project. Option one is to complete the project under direct supervision of a member of the UCD School of Mathematical Sciences. Option two is to, if successful in their application and if an appropriate position is available, complete the project in the form of an applied research placement with an actuarial firm under the supervision of a qualified actuary and in liaison with a member of the UCD School of Mathematical Sciences. In both cases the student will be expected to write a dissertation detailing the topics they have explored, which should demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the material and an understanding of the wider context in which it applies.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the project students will have:
- gained an in-depth knowledge of a particular topic in actuarial science
- written a dissertation on the topic demonstrating critical judgement and evaluation skills of actuarial techniques
- given an oral presentation communicating actuarial concepts in the context of the chosen topic
