The Roundtables serve two main complementary objectives although the first of these is the primary one:
• First, they give students an opportunity to do presentations on their work and get feedback and support from staff and colleagues. There is a strong emphasis on peer learning and support in the group.
• Second, the Roundtables provide students and staff with the opportunity to discuss texts of relevance to their research. Students may propose readings and all of us read these and discuss them. This gives us a chance to explore new ideas in the field.

Attendance and participation in the Roundtables is important for developing your ideas and getting and giving feedback to others. It is part of the work of the Roundtable to read your colleagues’ work and comment on it at the meeting. This helps their learning and your own.

Students are expected to act collegially by attending all the Roundtables and to engage with other’s work even if it is not in their particular area of specialisation. If you find it impossible to attend a session, please let the coordinators know in advance.

The Roundtables take place every 2 weeks.

Learning Outcomes:

The module will help you develop a range of important academic skills including:
presenting to an academic audience
acting as a discussant on an academic paper
asking supportive questions and
providing constructive comments.

Indicative Module Content:

To tailor skills requirements to students needs, at the first session you will be invited to suggest topics on which to focus one or two sessions. The remainder of the sessions will be devoted to the dissertation topics of students who present during the course of the module.
