This module addresses crucial human rights and social justice issues in Ireland and around the globe.

It explores:

- The origins and ongoing development of human rights;
- Their current status in international and domestic law, and;
- How they are mobilised to advance the goals of social justice movements.

We evaluate human rights from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective, investigating their limits and potential in tackling contemporary social injustices such as racism and poverty.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module students should be able to:

1. Evaluate the evolution of human rights knowledge and systems for the protection of human rights
2. Understand the role of social justice movements, non-governmental organisations and national human rights institutions in advancing the protection of human rights
3. Critically reflect on the mobilisation of human rights through strategic litigation
4. Communicate their knowledge and understanding of human rights and social justice to various audiences

The two continuous assessment research tasks form the basis of in-class discussion forums. Individual feedback is provided to students on their final assignments, using a rubric.
