SPOL28150 Global Social Policy

This module introduces students to global social policy, by exploring research and current debates about globalization and its impact on social policy in the world. The module will discuss in what way globalization influences lives of individuals, communities, countries and regions. It will also examine how various actors within multilevel governance structures (governments, citizens, business, third-sector organizations, supranational and international organizations and advocacy groups) are addressing social and public issues (e.g. sustainability, global health, climate change, welfare state reforms, trans-regional / transnational relations, and intercultural communications). A particular focus will be placed on Europe and Asia. Studying the literature on these topics, students will develop their analytical skills and acquire knowledge of comparative methods.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of globalisation, social policy, welfare state and international relations in the social science literature;
2. Grasp the dynamics among main actors to affect global social policy: states, businesses, non-governmental and supra-national organisations, citizens, and non-state organised political actors; and
3. Demonstrate understanding of the key concepts in comparative social policy analysis.

Indicative Module Content:

The themes include: globalisation, welfare states in crisis, multi-level governance & global diplomacy, the European Union, climate change, global health and the Asian Century. A syllabus with the list of reading will be circulated prior to the module.
