Adopting a theme-based approach, this module explores Spanish verse written by three of Spain's finest poets of the last century .
Account will be given of the intellectual and social climate and the different literary and artistic movements prevailing when Guillén, Lorca and Aleixandre were writing these works.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:- identify, describe and discuss the key themes in these major poets' work; -scrutinise and interpret the historical and intellectual climate of pre-Civil War Spain; - reflect on and improve their own command of Spanish at higher registers; -reason, argue and express in writing their views on literature and literary topics.

Weeks 1-4 : Introduction + " Cántico (1928)"

Weeks 5-8 : '' Poeta en Nueva York''

Weeks 9-12: "Pasion de la tierra''

Prior to the setting of each essay. techniques for academic writing will be discussed in class.Students may also avail of individual consultations on ideas and expression. Feedback will be provided on the essay scripts themselves. These will be returned by appointment.
