This module explores how Catalan identity is expressed and performed through a variety of cultural and social practices, including visual and performance arts, installation, literature, posters, festivals and cinema. No previous knowledge of the Catalan language is required.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this modules students will:

1.Have become familiar with the notion of Catalan identity.
2. Demonstrate an awareness of social, political and cultural issues related to Catalonia and the Catalan Speaking Territories.
3. Be able to analyse and interpret historical processes, visual and written texts; and social practices.
4. Produce original, theory-informed and context sensitive critical analysis of Catalan cultural production.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered face-to-face through two lectures, seminars, or workshops per week. Students will be expected to prepare questions or read secondary sources for seminars and to participate actively in discussions. Formative work and activities will be set as practice for assessments, with feedback provided by the module coordinator.
