This module explores the representation and construction of space and place in a range of Spanish films, here, space and place are understood as the locus for social, cultural, political and racial conflict. Sensitive to historical context, it investigates five topical space-themes related to Spain, from the end of the civil war to the present day, namely: haunted spaces; geopolitical peripheries; cultural displacement; the remapping of the past; and migration. The films studied are: El espíritu de la colmena (Víctor Erice 1973), Pa negre (Agustí Villaronga 2010), Carmen (Carlos Saura 1983), Soldados de Salamina (David Trueba, 2002) and Retorno a Hansala (Chus Gutiérrez, 2008).

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this modules students will:

Have become familiar with theories of space and place

Demonstrate an awareness of social, political and cultural issues related to Spain, from the end of the civil war to the present-day.

Be able to analyse and interpret film scenes making use of technical terminology to discuss in terms of narrative, aesthetics and socio-cultural and political context.

Produce original, theory-informed and context sensitive critical analysis of Spanish films.

Indicative Module Content:

The films studied in this module are 'El espíritu de la colmena' (Víctor Erice 1973), 'Pa negre' (Agustí Villaronga 2010), 'Carmen' (Carlos Saura 1983) and 'Retorno a Hansala' (Chus Gutiérrez, 2008).

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be delivered face-to-face through two lectures, seminars, or workshops per week. Students will be expected to read and watch set scenes from the texts and films ahead of class, to prepare questions or read secondary sources for seminars, and to participate actively in discussions. The summative assessment has two components: a scene analysis (35%) and a final essay (65%). Formative work and activities will be set as practice for these assessments, with feedback provided by the module coordinator.
