SOC30580 Latin American Sociology

Academic Year 2022/2023

This module is focused on understanding and discussing sociology made in and applied to Latin America, with particular focus on South America. Contemporary and historical topics will be critically evaluated, involving elements of culture, political dynamics, socio-economic inequality and social movements. Students are expected to be critically engaged throughout the module in activities such as PeerScholar and other assessments. Expert guest lecturers may also participate.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students should be able to: (a) critically discuss key concepts related to Latin American sociology and (b) understand how both global and local historical trajectories have influenced contemporary social dynamics and social science in the region. Main references for this module are peer reviewed academic publications in English. Students are also welcome, but not required, to read other relevant publications both in Portuguese and Spanish.
