SOC20250 Sociology of Nations

Academic Year 2022/2023

What is a nation? In this module the student is introduced to the idea of the nation as a group of people. The focus, therefore, is on people rather than states. To gain this understanding of nations, the student is introduced to various perspectives on the nation as well as other ideas, such as nationalism and national identity. These ideas are placed in the socio-historical context of Ireland, of other European countries and, occasionally, of other countries outside Europe.
