SMGT40440 Sport Event M & Sustainability

This module focuses on contemporary issues surrounding sport event management and the steps involved in the event project management process. Students will acquire project management skills and an awareness of the wider socio-cultural and economic context within which sport events exist. The module also focusses on sustainable development through sport events. Students will acquire sustainability reporting skills and a grounding in the challenges of delivering sport events in a sustainable manner.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the module, students should be able to:

1. Understand types of sport events and contemporary issues in sport event management
2. Assess sport event footprints (social, economic, environmental)
3. Analyse the types and influences of sport event stakeholders
4. Develop a sport event project portfolio using the PMI ® project management methodology
5. Critically reflect upon sustainability reports to evaluate strengths and weaknesses
6. Create a sport event sustainability plan and report
7. Utilize project management tools such as (work breakdown structure, network diagram, risk register, critical path analysis, RACI matrix)

Indicative Module Content:

Types of sport events (elite/recreational, e-sports and online events, public/voluntary/private sector events)
Contemporary issues in sport event management (professionalisation, commercialisation, digitalisation, social change, governance and accountability)
Sport events’ impacts and notions of effectiveness (Olympic Games Global Impacts framework)
Event project management (Introduction to the PMI ® project management methodology)
Sustainable development and sport events (UN SDGs, ISO Standards, case study of mega sport event sustainability policies and reports)
Sport event sustainability reporting (Global Reporting Initiative) and assurance mechanisms
